People’s Corner: Melvin Poplar

Melvin1Tell us about yourself

I am the husband to my best friend/high school sweet heart/the one I write songs about/wife Toya, and father to our six children.  I like to build and create things.  I’m sort of an undercover nerd who projects a cool persona.  I love Jesus, and got more than a couple rhymes about Him.

What motivates you to do what you do?

What motivates me is my desire to be the full manifestation of who God has called me to be.  Husband, Father, Son, Friend, Artist, Employee & Craftsman. I believe that people should see the Father in everything that we do.  My work ethic comes from watching my Dad work hard and provide for his family.  Some of the main things ingrained in me from my Dad was entrepreneurship and taking care of family.   Jesus said, “I only do what I see my Father doing.”  As a child of God, I want my confession to be the same.

What is one verse that has been significant in your life and why?

Proverbs 3:5 & 6

When I’m trusting the Lord, I’m not leaning on my own understanding.  I believe that trusting Him, acknowledging Him and having faith are parts of our walk that will be continuously exercised.

What is God speaking to you right now?

What God is saying is two fold, REST concerning the cares of this world, and URGENCY regarding The Kingdom of God.

What is one of your most memorable God moments in this city?

How the Lord orchestrated the adoption of our youngest 3 children and the acquisition of our home.  After our decision to step out on faith and adopt 1, 2, & 3 year old little boys, we would have a need and before we could pray about it, God used people who heard our adoption story to meet the need by leaving it on our front porch.  God provided encouragement when it was most needed. I’ll never forget something our oldest son told us shortly after our adoption.

“Dad, it’s like our family went from doing church to being the church.”

Huntsville is a place in which I have seen people “be the church.” Everything that felt like a sacrifice at the time of our adoption, the Lord has since redeemed.  In 2011 I temporarily stopped rapping, stepped down from ministry, took a second job and led my family through a season of stress like we had never known before.  Here we are, only 4 years later and God has brought things full circle.  I’m about to release my 5th Album.   The Lord has blessed us with a home that not only accommodates our family but allowed us to host exchange students.  I no longer work 2 jobs and my wife and I are about to go on a missions trip to Honduras in which we will get to visit our former exchange students.
