“When God Whispered to Eve” by Rev Robin Gilbert

My husband and I are preachers and prior to our union we both pastored churches, and we often are invited to preach together, sometimes it is a special occasion and he will preach in the morning and I will preach in the afternoon, sometimes we preach together, but most often one of us preaches and the other sits on the pew and smiles, nods and feels extremely blessed to be part of such an awesome union.

One Sunday, my husband was preaching and after a powerful sermon he stretched out his hands and invited any one who had the desire to come forth for prayer or to give their lives to God, to do so. A lady slowly and deliberately walked toward the front of the church, just as she reached the front of the room another lady began her decent, and another lady, and another and then a teenage girl and soon there was a gathering of ladies at the front of the church holding each other, crying tears of pain and joy and desiring prayer.

My husband came out of the pulpit and stood amongst the women. He spoke to them in a quiet whisper and then he parted the gathering of women and beckoned for me to join him. Reaching for the microphone he then said, “The Lord has instructed me to have my wife pray for these women because sometimes only a woman knows what a woman needs.” As I slowly walked down the aisle, one of the associate pastors of the church began to pray for the ladies. His prayer was strong, and spirit filled and no doubt a blessing; for three women gave their lives to Christ that day.

On the ride home, my husband apologized, and I responded by telling him that there was no need to apologize because Gods work was done. He smiled and squeezed my hand. As we rode silently down the highway I was overwhelmed with the presence of God and the guilt of my lack of boldness.

You see, at the moment my husband beckoned me to come forth, the Lord was speaking to me. I knew what my assignment was, I knew the urgency and I hesitated. God was whispering in my ear with clear and concise instructions and I hesitated. A direct path was lit, and I hesitated. And because I hesitated I was overcome with remorse for not obeying my Father and riddled with guilt for not responding quickly enough and standing by the side of my husband. The experience led me to the Word and as I opened my Bible, I read this scripture, 21 So the Lord God caused the man to sleep very deeply. While he was asleep, God took one of the ribs from the man’s body. Then he closed the man’s skin where the rib had been. 22 The Lord God used the rib from the man to make a woman. Then he brought the woman to the man. ~Genesis 2:21-22 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

As I read Genesis I saw a hesitation. I saw a hesitation in verse 22, 22 The Lord God used the rib from the man to make a woman……… Then he brought the woman to the man, and I wondered, did God whisper to her? Did he whisper to her just before He brought her to the man? Did God whisper to her the way he whispered to me? Did he tell her, in the moment he gave her life that she was fearfully and wonderfully made? Did God tell her that he had a plan to for her, that she would not be harmed but would prosper? Did God tell her that there was not a suitable helper for Adam so he created her? What did God whisper to Eve before he brought her to Adam?

I don’t know. But I know what He whispered to me. He told me that I am fearfully and wonderfully made! That he has a plan for me, and as long as I walk with Him I will not be harmed, and I will prosper! God told me to walk boldly, to pray with purpose and to share and testify to His Goodness. His Grace. His Mercy. God whispered to me and told me that he will never give me an assignment that I am not equipped for and able to handle. God whispered to me and told me that he is my savior. God whispered to me and he said, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, yes, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand”. ~Isaiah 41:10 Modern English Version (MEV)

What did God say when he whispered to Eve? I heard him when he whispered to me. What does God say when he whispers to you?
