Consistent

by D’kresha Adams

Psalm 109:26 “Help me, Lord my God; save me according to Your unfailing love.”

In our society we write paragraphs on Facebook, chapters in books, and blog posts all about our need to be understood, wanted, loved ,and most importantly, saved! We can sometimes buy into society’s lie that there is someone or something on this earth waiting to complete us. The answer to all of our emptiness is somewhere on this earth and it walks and has a heart. We are seeking someone or something who can survive the sea of our souls. We are seeking someone or something to not only survive there but take residency there. We are looking for an anchor. We are looking for something that will keep us when we cannot keep ourselves. We are looking for it tangibly. In our quest for consistency, we can sometimes mow through people, I did. I can remember feeling emotionally unsafe, meanwhile I was physically out of harm’s way. I can remember feeling like my soul needed to be held, though my body was fine. There wasn’t a corner in my mind that could wrap its arms around me and assure me that I was safe, that I was home. There was no place that I could run that could comfort me, because it didn’t have a heartbeat. I wanted someone who could step inside of me and translate this agony, translate my pain. I couldn’t understand pain; I just knew it was there and I needed it to go away or someone to step in it with me. I’m sure you’ve felt like that. I’m sure you’ve been drowning and looked for safety in the same waves that were killing you. Our thirst for consistency is like the grave and people will always leave us unsatisfied. Yet, I still found myself running to a house only to realize it had no roof. I realized home was on my dresser and its pages were my living room. Yes, I mean the bible.

Proverbs 14:10 says “Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can share its joy.”

The “Let God be true” commentary says it like this: “Only you know your own sadness and joy. Others may care for you or say they know you, but they truly cannot and do not. And for you to sympathize with others and help them, you must slow down and look deeper. Finally, Jesus knows His friends perfectly. You are a unique individual, just as every snowflake is different. The depths of bitterness and heights of joy that you feel cannot be fully known or appreciated by others. Your heart, soul, mind, and conscience create a private set of feelings and thoughts that are known only by you and your Creator. Others cannot discover or define your true feelings. Anguish and pain in your soul from circumstances, fear, guilt, or hopelessness are your personal property and cannot be felt or understood by a stranger, anyone outside you. Neither can a stranger, anyone outside your soul, grasp and appreciate the joy of your heart, when you are enraptured by circumstances, hope, love, or success.

So this search that you are on for consistency doesn’t have to be endless. This search you are on to finally be understood, loved, and saved can end with picking up the Bible.

The Word of Truth tells us in psalm 109:26 that we can call out to OUR God and He will save us according to His unfailing love. 2 Timothy 2:13 tells us that when we are faithless, HE is faithful because He cannot deny Himself.

My friends, that Someone you are seeking to complete you, to take residency in your soul walked the earth.

His name is JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH , the Lord who IS present!

His name is JEHOVAH-RAPHA, the Lord our healer!

His name is JEHOVAH-JIREH, the Lord our provider!

His name is JEHOVAH-NISSI, the Lord our banner!

His name is JEHOVAH-SHALOM,  the Lord our peace!

His name is JESUS, the SAVIOR!

There is no consistent-constant love, understanding, healing, peace, and safety outside of Him. On this journey for consistency maybe you’ve thrown away a lot of people who couldn’t oblige to your safety. But now you can put down your bags because everything you’re searching for is and was here. He is the I AM. He is deeper than the ocean, wider than space, and more constant than the rising of the sun. Anything or anyone you depend on will move………….BUT HE WON’T! Our desire for intimacy is not wrong, where we look for it is. Our joys and sorrows can be understood fully by none other than OUR creator. We make creations our home and end up homeless. God created you, so it makes perfect sense that only He can fulfill your deepest desires. No more looking for somebody to hold you when perfect love took holes so you could be a whole you.

Jesus says in Luke22 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

Let not our thirst for tangible safety cause us to deny the Savior. Peter told Jesus that he was ready to follow Him to prison and to death and later we find Him denying the same God he claimed to be following wherever.

Where will we find ourselves?

We get to have home in a book and live in its pages.

When we reach for safety will we grab it or them? Paul tells us in 2 Timothy chapter 4 “Proclaim the message: PERSIST in it whether convenient or not.” I say all this to say: I know sometimes life could cause us to search for home outside of Jesus. Circumstances can cause us to search for safety, healing, and peace outside of the Savior. Saints, consider Paul: a prisoner in chains. Consider his uncircumstantial faith. He tells us in 2 Timothy to “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David; such is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship to the point of imprisonment as a criminal, but God’s message is not imprisoned!” Paul’s circumstances had him bound but he knew he was saved according to Jesus’s unfailing love.

So no, there is no creation that can heal you, save you, and give surpassing peace. There is not one that can fully grasp and understand what is going on inside of you and save you from it. But there is ONE TRIUNE GOD and He is the God who sees you. When voices from the world come along and offer paralyzing promises and call it “love, safety, and peace” tell them LOVE moved from heaven to earth to cross the grave and back to heaven. You tell them LOVE walked and that the standard for LOVE is 2 Timothy 2:13, “When we are faithless, He is faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” And HE will deny us when we accept HIS consistent invitation!
