Advent 2016 “Simple Pleasures…Lifetime Memories”

Christmas is not an instant holiday, but a season of sharing memories, traditions and love.  It’s a time for sifting through all the excitement to grasp those precious moments with family and friends.  If we aren’t careful the tinsel, santas, and partying snuff out the spiritual emphasis we want for our families during the Christmas season.  Here are a few simple suggestions of ways you can slow down, focus on Jesus, and thoroughly enjoy this wondrous time of year.
.
** After attaching lights to the tree, turn them on and gather around for a brief quiet time.  Read John 8:12 and John 1:4-8.  Together thank Jesus for being the light of the world.

** During December, take turns letting each family member choose a Christmas card and read it before the evening meal.  Discuss each card’s message and why each sender is special to your family.  Remember the sender in your table prayer.

** Make a family Christmas program video to send to faraway relatives.

** Roast marshmallows over the fireplace, stove, or even a candle as you review past Christmases.  Have Grandpa or Grandma share what their childhood Christmases were like.

** Bundle up, take a walk after dark, enjoy the stillness, look at the stars.  Imagine what it would be like to be shepherds on a dark hill, watching sheep and suddenly hear from an angel messenger and chorus!

** Invite a special friend or family to attend the Christmas program or caroling party at church, or a community Christmas program.

** Ask each family member to choose at least one tree ornament that reminds him of Jesus.  Placing the ornament on the tree, the person can explain his choice or challenge others to guess the connection.

** Make love-knot gifts to hang on the tree.  Tie ribbon around small, rolled papers promising kind deeds or attitudes. (ie. more cooperation, 2 hrs. of free babysitting, a week of clearing the dinner table, more fun times, picking up my room, go to bed without fussing, etc.)

** Conduct several “carol checks” during December to make sure you enjoy the message of Christ in music.  Read, sing or listen to a Christmas carol.  Be sure you all understand the words.

** Have a Jesus birthday party (on or before Christmas) complete with balloons, cake and ice cream and a couple of party games.  Ask each one to share what gift they are giving to Jesus for His birthday.  Don’t forget to sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus!

** Have the kids make holiday name cards or place mats for each setting at Christmas dinner.

**  Don’t forget to give the gift of prayer at Christmas – there are lots of ways.  One example is to hang up a Christmas stocking to be stuffed with prayer requests written on slips of paper by the family and all who visit in your home over the holidays.  The family might pray for the requests between Christmas and New Years Day.
